Chemquiz 2016

One hundred and twenty young chemists from schools around Manchester were at the John Dalton building at Manchester Metropolitan University yesterday (June 16th) to compete in Chemquiz 2016.

This annual event has been organised by the education sub-committee of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Manchester and District Section since 1987.

This year teams of four students from Years 8-10 from thirty schools in Cheshire, Lancashire and Greater Manchester, took part in chemical quizzes, laboratory exercises and multimedia competitions sponsored by the chemical company BASF.

The overall winners, Bolton School Boys Division, were runners-up in 2015. Thomas Yates, James Leese-Weller, Thomas Britton and Matthew Schaffel will go on to represent the region in next year’s RSC Top of the Bench competition.

The runners-up were Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School, represented by Luke Wales, Erin Hargreaves, Emer Shell and Paul Jackson.

Third place went to the Bury Grammar School Boys team of Chris Parr, Max Carroll, Sanjush Dalmia and Jay Broadhurst.

The winners of the Kathryn Oliver Leonard Teamwork Award were Annabel James, Georgie Saunders, Jewel Bennett, and Maggie Chordate from Alderley Edge School for Girls.
