BASF Coatings expands business with biomass-balanced products
- Reduction of around 8 million kilograms of CO2 in 2024 for BASF products
- More than 250 products in 3 regions and 3 business areas
- Launch of biomass-balanced refinish coatings products in North America in 2025
BASF Coatings is consistently pursuing its strategic roadmap for sustainable development and is further expanding its business with biomass-balanced products. Following successful launches in Europe and Asia, the first products for the automotive refinish coatings market will now also be introduced in North America this year. These products further contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions and circular economy. BASF Coatings thus continues to position itself at the forefront of sustainable transformation in the coatings industry.
The company's biomass-balanced products are offered under names including ReSource for automotive OEM coatings, functional texturized films, and refinish coatings under the Glasurit® Eco Balance and R-M® eSense brands. In total, BASF Coatings already offers a portfolio of around 250 sales products with the biomass balance approach. Following the successful launches in the European and Asian regions, the North American automotive refinish market is now to follow.
“With the upcoming expansion of our offering for North America, we are further strengthing our commitment to sustainability,” explains Dr. Markus Piepenbrink, Head of Sustainability at BASF Coatings. “We want to create double-added value for our customers by providing high-performance and sustainable solutions and also actively supporting our customers in the transformation to a sustainable coatings industry.” Dennis Dropmann, Sustainability Manager at BASF Coatings and responsible for the topic of mass balance, emphasizes: “We are replacing part of the fossil resources with renewable raw materials, which makes an important contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In 2024, our more than 250 biomass-balanced products saved around 8 million kilograms of CO2 emissions, and we are aiming for the 10 million mark in 2025.”
In BASF's biomass balance approach, renewable raw materials are already used as raw materials in the manufacture of basic chemical products. The proportion of alternative raw materials is then attributed to specific sales products according to the certified method. REDcert² is a certification system for the sustainable use of biomass that confirms that BASF has replaced the quantities of fossil resources required for the biomass-balanced product sold with renewable raw materials.

BASF product carbon footprints are calculated following the requirements and guidelines of ISO 14067:2018 and Together for Sustainability (TfS). The product carbon footprints for biomass balance products are assessed cradle to gate, i.e. without CO2 emissions caused during product application and end-of-life treatment. Our product carbon footprint data is based on assumptions and approximations valid at the time of data collection.
