One of life’s great little pleasures

  • American coffee machine manufacturer Bruvi uses Ultrason® polyethersulfone (PESU) by BASF for extractor lens in its coffee brewers
  • Ultrason® E 2010 shows excellent mechanical strength, dimensional stability and hot steam resistance
  • Ideal material for smart household appliances that combine ease of digital use with high performance

The American coffee brand Bruvi® now uses Ultrason® E 2010 to manufacture the extractor lens in its coffee brewers. The complex injection-molded component is part of Bruvi’s unique auto-optimized brewing technique, scanning the coffee pod and then automatically adjusting the brewing parameters to the specific recipe for the optimal brew of each individual coffee. The BASF polyethersulfone (PESU) contributes to the durability of the machine by its excellent mechanical strength, its high heat and steam resistance up to 180°C, as well as dimensional stability at varying temperatures. The food-contact approved thermoplastic meets Bruvi’s standards for ensuring tastier coffee and hygienic brewing: It does not affect the taste of the coffee or gives off any odors. This allows Ultrason® E 2010 to outperform other materials which are used in coffee machine applications.

The high-quality thermoplastic Ultrason® E 2010 is approved for food contact according to American, European and Chinese specifications. Single-serve brewing systems like the one by Bruvi benefit from its temperature-independent mechanical properties and the absence of harmful substances, meeting Bruvi’s requirements for constantly exceptional flavor and high precision in preparing the different brewing options – all this over the whole service life of the machine. “Our brewers combine high performance, ease of use, customization and versatility”, says Sung Oh, Co-Founder of Bruvi. “We selected Ultrason® because it supports our advanced brewing technology: It is safe to use and also withstands the high pressure and hot steam occurring during coffee making. The extractor lens made of Ultrason® is key for our automatic brewing system, which creates the optimal coffee taste, just like the roaster intended.”

Thus, Ultrason® also enables smart home appliances that are digitally operated or remote-controlled via apps. “Our tailored Ultrason® grades for household and catering applications have advanced coffee-making technologies for some time now,” says Georg Graessel from global business development Ultrason® at BASF. “Coffee has become a trend beverage, so the demands on the materials used are manifold, uncompromising and now go more and more digital, too. Our cooperation with the brewing specialist Bruvi shows that we can offer our customers the tailored material for durable and modern household appliances, a reliable material supply in all regions and the corresponding technical services." The medium-viscosity grade Ultrason® E 2010 can be smoothly injection-molded and easily assembled with screws because of its very good mechanical properties. The extractor lens made of Ultrason® E 2010 is overmolded with rubber so that the coffee capsule sits tightly and no water runs into the machine.

Ultrason® is the trade name for BASF’s product range of polyethersulfone (Ultrason® E), polysulfone (Ultrason® S) and polyphenylsulfone (Ultrason® P). The high-performance thermoplastic is used to manufacture water filtration membranes, stylish, durable and safe household and catering applications as well as lightweight components for the automotive and aerospace industries. Ultrason® brands can substitute thermosets, metals, glass and ceramics in many applications because of their extraordinary property profile.
