BASF launches podcast SUBSTANCE

  • New format will be released monthly starting this September
  • Joe Hanson presents gripping stories and BASF innovations focused on sustainability
  • Podcast replaces print magazine Creating Chemistry

In September, the first season of the new BASF podcast SUBSTANCE launches. It will be released once a month in English and promises gripping stories, sustainable BASF innovations, and inspiring personalities. The podcast shines a light on topics of global importance, demonstrating how BASF solutions are driving the green transformation.

In eight episodes, host Joe Hanson, Ph.D., takes a close look at the materials that shape our lives – from hydrogen and plastic to fungi used in biotechnology. Hanson presents knowledge in an entertaining way and speaks with international guests and BASF experts about sustainable solutions and visionary projects. As a Ph.D. biologist he has been dedicated to science communication for many years and reaches millions of followers with his award-winning YouTube channel Be Smart.

In the first episode, he investigates the hype surrounding “golden hydrogen,” which is hidden deep in the Earth’s crust. Professor Barbara Sherwood Lollar from the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Toronto, Canada, and Dr. Olivier Sissmann, project manager at IFP Energies Nouvelles in Rueil-Malmaison, France, explain what’s behind it and whether the “gold rush” is justified. Volker Ehret, Production Manager Syngas at BASF, introduces the new electrolyzer in Ludwigshafen and explains how CO2-free hydrogen is produced.

Complex topics presented in an easy-to-understand way

SUBSTANCE replaces the print edition of Creating Chemistry magazine, which will only be published online in future. “With the new podcast, we are clearly focusing on digital communication and thus following user preferences,” explains Dr. Nina Schwab-Hautzinger, Head of Corporate Communications & Government Relations at BASF. “With digital channels, we can directly reach the people we want to engage.” The new podcast targets customers, applicants, investors, employees, and the interested public. “We want to tell exciting stories and learn from external perspectives as a company,” says Schwab-Hautzinger. “We follow an infotainment approach, combining entertainment with science. Our podcast makes complex topics easy to understand and inspires enthusiasm for sustainable solutions and the natural sciences.”

The podcast is available on Apple, Spotify, Deezer, and at www.basf.com/substance-podcast. The online magazine Creating Chemistry will feature additional content related to podcast episodes, as well as articles, videos, and infographics on other sustainability topics. New, for example, is a video series that shows how BASF solutions make everyday life easier. The first film about Infinergy® sport shoes can be found here.
