Eco Impact Assessment enables body shops to achieve efficiency gains by leveraging reliable data and advanced analytics
BASF Coatings has received certification from TÜV Rheinland for the calculation methodology of its Eco Impact Assessment tool. The independent assessment confirms that the methodology meets established standards for transparency and consistency. The certification verifies that the tool’s corporate carbon footprint calculations for body shops are aligned with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) protocol. This provides body shops with a validated basis for assessing and managing their environmental impact alongside operational performance.
Integrated into Refinity®, BASF Coatings’ cloud-based digital business management platform, the Eco Impact Assessment tool enables body shops to systematically evaluate and optimize their sustainability performance while supporting long-term profitability. Validated in 11 countries in Europe since 2025, the TÜV Rheinland certification provides additional confidence that the tool meets stringent, internationally recognized standards. The certification provides a validated database to support repair, investment and sustainability-related decisions and can be used in exchanges with insurers and green rating programs.
The Eco Impact Assessment tool applies a life cycle assessment-based measurement approach and evaluates all relevant material and energy flows within a body shop. This includes processes such as spraying and drying, product consumption, waste management and fleet operations. “Based on the real-life operational data and on-site measurements, Refinity Eco Impact Assessment provides a comprehensive view of ecological, economic and social performance. With minimal effort required from body shops and expert support from BASF Coatings consultants, sustainability becomes a measurable and manageable business factor,” states Dr. Markus Piepenbrink, Director Global Sustainability, BASF Coatings.
“Independent certification by TÜV Rheinland is a strong signal to our customers that the Eco Impact Assessment delivers credible, consistent, and actionable results,” said Dr. Rahel Reichmann, Head of Sustainability Automotive Refinish Coatings at BASF Coatings. “By creating a transparent corporate carbon footprint, the Eco Impact Assessment enables meaningful benchmarking, from individual body shops to MSO networks and insurer repair programs. At the same time, the results provide practical, actionable recommendations that help body shops identify improvement opportunities and turn sustainability measures into measurable efficiency and cost advantages.”
The certification by TÜV Rheinland provides an independent validation of the sustainability assessment process. This can support body shops in demonstrating their environmental performance to customers, insurers, and OEMs. It also helps address increasing requirements related to transparency and sustainability in the automotive refinish market. Following successful introductions in Europe, BASF Coatings is expanding access to the TÜV-certified Eco Impact Assessment tool into further regions. Supported by BASF Coatings consultancy and expert teams, body shops can combine validated sustainability assessments with practical improvement measures, creating a measurable impact for their business and the environment.
