BASF launches MicadelvaTM and its new Safe-by-Design concept for creating future-proof fragrance ingredients

  • BASF expands its fragrance ingredients portfolio with Micadelva, a non-allergenic, citrus alternative to orange terpenes
  • Micadelva is now launched and available for orders and sample requests via BASF representatives
  • The Future-Proof-Palette with Safe-by-Design innovations is designed to support creative fragrance development in a changing regulatory environment

Ludwigshafen, Germany – BASF Aroma Ingredients has launched Micadelva, a new citrus fragrance ingredient developed as a non-allergenic alternative to orange terpenes. Rather than directly replacing traditional orange materials, Micadelva presents a new orange platform for perfumers. This allows fragrance creators to achieve modern, agrumic citrus effects through reformulation, offering a refined and longer lasting freshness profile compared to conventional citrus ingredients.

In addition, BASF Aroma Ingredients introduced its innovation concept based on Safe-by-Design principles derived from the EU Commission’s Safe and Sustainable by Design framework1.The concept supports fragrance creation in an increasingly complex and fast-paced regulatory landscape and enables the development of an innovative Future-Proof-Palette.
Micadelva also supports customers’ sustainability ambitions. The product contains 80% renewable carbon2, is readily biodegradable and based on current estimates, is expected to feature a low product carbon footprint in the A++ range3 (below 2kg COe per kilogram), contributing to the development of more sustainable fragrance solutions.

“With Micadelva and our Safe-by-Design innovations, we are setting the direction for next-generation fragrance ingredients. The compelling sustainability profile contributes to the green transformation of our customers. This enables our customers to innovate with confidence while maintaining creative performance in an evolving market and regulatory environment,” said Steffen Götz, Senior Vice President, Aroma Ingredients at BASF.

Micadelva: A new dimension in citrus design

As the latest innovation within the Future-Proof-Palette, Micadelva opens a new dimension in citrus design. This fragrance ingredient delivers a clean, fresh orange-peel character with a subtle metallic edge and gentle floral facets, providing clarity and long-lasting freshness in fragrance compositions. It is a non-allergenic alternative to orange terpenes.

Following its introduction in Europe in May 2026, Micadelva will be rolled out across regions on a staggered timeline, supporting customers globally in their reformulation and innovation projects.

Introduction of the Future-Proof-Palette with innovations based on Safe-by-Design principles

The Future-Proof-Palette includes Dihydrorosan®, Velberry® and now, Micadelva, covering floral/green, fruity/gourmand and citrus, olfactive spaces. All three ingredients share Safe-by-Design principles, combining high performance and excellent regulatory profiles.
These ingredients demonstrate how BASF’s Safe-by-Design approach enables the development of innovative molecules that balance creative performance with high safety standards. By assessing mutagenicity, endocrine activity, persistence, and other potential hazards early in development and advancing only candidates with favorable profiles, BASF further upgrades its future-oriented portfolio of fragrance ingredients designed to meet evolving regulatory expectations.

“Micadelva and the expansion of our Future-Proof-Palette with Safe-by-Design innovations demonstrate BASF’s strong scientific expertise in developing innovative aroma ingredients with differentiated olfactive and functional performance,” said Felix Gard, Head of Specialty Aroma Ingredients at BASF. “At the same time, it reflects our deep regulatory know-how, enabling solutions that support customers in navigating evolving regulatory requirements.”
