Management

How can sustainability be measured? How does a company involve its stakeholders? How can risks relating to social issues and the environment be minimized?

BASF answered some of these questions before 1994, or became a pioneer in tackling them.

Monitoring

Making a commitment to international standards or self-obligations is one side of the coin, checking that this is actually adhered to is the other. To this end, BASF has maintained a number of monitoring systems and complaint mechanisms since the mid-1980s.

Interlinkage

BASF gets involved in global initiatives and networks for sustainable development at an early stage, often as a founding member. However, it also maintains and institutionalizes dialog with its stakeholders on-site.

Measurement

BASF developed innovative analysis and measuring methods in order to better assess the contribution of processes and products to sustainability. These provide important decision criteria. The first step was the Eco-Efficiency Analysis in 1996.
