Global Presence - BASF Around the World
BASF around the World: BASF’s success story begins in Ludwigshafen on the Rhine in 1865. Products manufactured here are sold nearly everywhere in the world. Today, BASF is the world’s leading chemical company.
Building up BASF's global presence begins with establishing an international sales organization. In the 1870s, BASF sets up its first foreign production sites, too. A systematic approach to foreign production, however, is only taken since the 1960s. In the meantime, BASF operates production sites on all continents, including six Verbund sites. Since the 1990s, research and development facilities are increasingly built abroad.
BASF’s development into a global player exhibits distinctive features. One of them is the foundation of joint ventures as admission tickets to foreign markets. In turn, worldwide markets also show characteristics – regional peculiarities and cultural differences – that emerge from reports of BASF employees from all over the world.
