In Brazil, 13 million people live below the extreme poverty line of US$ 1.90/day. Most of them cannot find jobs and improve their situation due to lack of skills.

60% of Brazilian cities dispose their waste in dumps with no sanitary control, leading to water and soil contamination. Waste pickers work in such places under unsafe and deleterious conditions.

Through a partnership with the non-profit organization Recicleiros, BASF will fund a nationwide program to improve waste segregation processes, by establishing well-structured cooperatives as well as by providing decent work conditions, training and income to waste pickers.

By funding this program, BASF will receive recycling certificates and distribute them with customers as in a loyalty program based on a partnership reward. Customers will use such certificates to achieve their compensation targets according to local reverse logistics regulations.
