What's New

BASF adds ISCC EU certification to certified biomass-balanced methanol portfolio

BASF has broadened its offering for certified biomass-balanced methanol products  by adding the ISCC EU certification to its existing portfolio. Since mid-2025, BASF’s Intermediates division has been supplying biomass-balanced methanol that is certified under ISCC EU, enabling BASF to meet the full range of certification requirements across both the chemical and biofuel sectors. For the chemical industry, methanol is certified under the ISCC PLUS and REDcert² standards, while ISCC EU and REDcert-EU certifications address the specific regulatory needs of the biofuel sector. This comprehensive certification framework allows BASF to support its customers in different industries to achieve their sustainability goals and comply with regulatory requirements.
Climate protection is a central component of the BASF strategy. For many years, the company has been continuously reducing its CO2 emissions. For further significant reduction, innovative processes such as methane pyrolysis are developed as part of our Carbon Management R&D Program. In the project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Germany), BASF researchers are working on a new reactor concept in which hydrogen can be produced without CO2 emissions. The first milestone has now been reached. Our test facility at the Verbund site in Ludwigshafen (Germany) has started in experimental mode.

From Waste to Value: Recycling Automotive Shredder Residue and Bio-Waste into High-Value Feedstock

Ludwigshafen, Zurich, 30 October 2025. A new research study by ETH Zurich, in collaboration with BASF SE, has investigated an alternative route for mixed plastic waste streams from end-of-life vehicles: to recycle it alongside biomass. The results show: the recycling of one kg of automotive shredder residues with 3 kg of biomass reduces greenhouse gas emissions by more than 3 kg CO2-eq. as compared to their incineration for energy recovery. As the European Union prepares legislation on end-of-life vehicles, these findings have implications for policy makers.
