BASF does not anticipate any health hazards from TDI

  • Analysis of foams show low DCB levels in TDI produced in Ludwigshafen, Germany
  • Intensive dialog with customers, associations and consumers

Ludwigshafen, Germany / Hong Kong – October 13, 2017 – BASF experts have conducted initial tests on foams made from TDI produced in Ludwigshafen, Germany between August 25 and September 29 as part of a risk assessment. The results and subsequent calculations show that health hazards are not anticipated. BASF is providing the responsible authorities and the relevant associations with the details of the assessment. None of the affected TDI has been directly delivered to Asia. The quality fluctuation in Ludwigshafen does not affect any production plants in Asia, and no related issues have been detected.

Of the 7,500 metric tons of TDI, which have a higher dichlorobenzene value, about two-thirds were not yet further processed. The withdrawal of the product has started in close cooperation with the customers. A team of around 75 specialists is working together with customers to clarify open questions.

About 300 calls, mainly from consumers, have been made to BASF’s hotline for customers and consumers. Most of the questions have been about finished products such as mattresses. BASF is in close contact with the relevant associations for mattresses and foam producers in order to find a solution as quickly as possible.
