BASF joins Business for Nature's Call to Action, Nature is Everyone's Business

September 22, 2020

BASF has joined Business for Nature’s (BfN) Call for Action “Nature is Everyone’s Business” on governments to adopt ambitious nature policies. Business for Nature is a global coalition bringing together influential organizations and forward-thinking businesses calling for governments to reverse nature loss. BfN points out that the natural resources and ecosystems we all rely on are under huge strain; over half the world's total GDP, $44 trillion of economic value, is moderately or highly exposed to risks from nature loss.

BfN launched a call on governments to act with courage and urgency by putting nature front and centre of policymaking supported by more than 560 businesses from 54 countries, employing 9.5 million people and across all sectors.

The call reads as follows: Healthy societies, resilient economies and thriving businesses rely on nature. Governments must adopt policies now to reverse nature loss in this decade. Together let's protect, restore and sustainably use our natural resources.

In line with its purpose “We create chemistry for a sustainable future”, BASF is making nature a priority through efficient use of resources across the supply chains, preserving and improving biodiversity, and setting ambitious non-financial targets.

In its forest protection position, BASF recognizes the importance of protecting the world’s forests for the well-being of the environment and society. We focus on our raw materials supply chains, our own operations, as well as our products in the combat against further deforestation. We work collaboratively with value chain partners, governments and civil society to conserve forests. BASF partners with a variety of organizations, including Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), Forum Nachhaltiges Palmöl, and the High Carbon Stock Approach Steering Group to raise and increase awareness, drive the necessary market transformation and to achieve impact on the ground. Collaborative programs such as Mata Viva, an initiative established in Brazil to drive reforestation and preserve native forests, demonstrate BASF's commitment to preventing deforestation and promoting reforestation.

In line with this approach, BASF has completed CDP’s Forest questionnaire (palm module) for the first time in 2020, providing detailed answers about the palm value chain and the impact of BASF’s activities on ecosystems and habitats. BASF targets to source only sustainable palm and palm kernel oil RSPO certified sustainable as far as available on the market by 2020.
