  • Introduces certified Biomass Balance (BMB) grades for Ultramid® PA, Ultraform® POM, Lupraphen, Elastopan® PU, Elastollan® TPU
  • BASF at Chinaplas 2023: Hall 17; Booth no. 17F71, Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center, China

Shenzhen, China – April 17, 2022 – At Chinaplas 2023, BASF demonstrates how it helps customers meet sustainability goals and advance their green journey with solutions for how plastics are made, used, and recycled.

“As green transformation becomes the new growth engine for the Chinese economy, chemical innovation plays a vital role in enabling sustainability and a circular economy. As a world-leading chemical company, BASF drives the transformation with our innovation capability and sustainability commitments. We will collaborate with our customers and value chain partners to build a green and low carbon future,” said Jeffrey Lou, President & Chairman, Greater China, BASF.

Mass Balance, Certified Chain of Custody and Product Carbon Footprint

In conjunction with Chinaplas, BASF also introduces certified Biomass Balanced (BMB) grades for Ultramid® PA, Ultraform® POM, Lupraphen, Elastopan® PU, Elastollan® TPU. The certified grades complement the Ultraform BMB grades launched in October 2022. Compared to conventional grades, the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of the Ultraform BMB solution was approximately 70 percent lower.

“BMB drives the use of renewable raw materials, saves fossil resources, and supports the reduction of GHG emissions. The certified BMB grades based on a Mass Balanced approach (ISO 22095) can be made available based on customer demand. Together with our customers, we will co-develop tailor-made solutions optimized to achieve their specific sustainability goals,” said Andy Postlethwaite, Senior Vice President, Performance Materials Asia Pacific, BASF.

In conjunction with the introduction of new Biomass Balanced products, BASF will continue to roll out more site certifications that verify its chain of custody, as well as CCycled® products, from 2025. All Performance Materials plants in China already use renewable energy, translating to a 60% savings in CO2 emissions.

Innovative and high-performance solutions empower a sustainable future by enabling the growth trajectory of eMobility & renewable energy

BASF announced that its Thermoplastic Polyurethane plant start-up in Zhanjiang is on track for the second half of 2023. Along with the plant producing Engineering Plastic compounds, BASF is well-positioned to meet the growing demand of its Asia Pacific customers, particularly in the automotive, electronics, and electric vehicles industries – in tandem with trends such as the electrification of cars and miniaturization of electronic devices.

BASF also announced that more than 50 polyphthalamide (PPA) compounds would be available locally from the second quarter of 2023 for customers in China and Asia-Pacific. This will support the market demand for lightweight, high-performance plastic components in the automotive industry, electrics and electronics (E&E), mechanical engineering, and smart consumer goods.

“Our investments and focus on collaborations, carbon management, and enabling the circular economy are pivotal to our next growth phase. We will continue to support China and the Asia region with innovative solutions backed by our various competencies, such as design and simulation,” added Mr. Postlethwaite.
