CHINAPLAS 2019: BASF’s innovative biopolymer solutions contribute to closing the loop of the food value chain

  • Showcase of environmentally friendly applications made of ecovio®, a certified compostable and soil-biodegradable plastic
  • ecovio® enables a closed-loop system that supports the collection of organic waste and prevents littering of agricultural films in the soil
  • BASF at CHINAPLAS 2019: Booth no. 11.2A41, China Import & Export Fair Complex, Guangzhou, China, May 21-24

Guangzhou  China – May 13, 2019 –At Chinaplas 2019, BASF will showcase innovative applications made of ecovio®, a certified compostable polymer with biobased content, that help to reduce white pollution in agriculture and  the products’ environmental footprint.

Products made of ecovio are fully biodegradable in compost, which means that they help to close the loop of the food value chain. The products range from packaging products such as paper bowls, paper cups, coffee capsules and organic waste bags to agricultural applications such as soil-biodegradable mulch films. ecovio is fully compostable in accordance with national standards such as EN 13432 for Europe, ASTM 6400 for the USA, GreenPLA for Japan and AS 4736 for Australia.

“With ecovio, we’re not only offering another high-performing and strong raw material for sustainable applications. In particular, we offer our customers products that help to close the loop of the food value chain, from agricultural production via consumption to disposal,” says Amir Pourirani, Head of Global Marketing Biopolymers, BASF.

All the applications made of ecovio contribute to the idea of a closed-loop system. Depending on the applications’ function different end-of-life options are possible, such as biodegradability on soil, industrial compostability and home compostability, thus bringing along environmental advantages and creating added value for BASF’s customers. For example, they can be organically recycled (composted) along with any leftover food; mulch films made of ecovio are completely and biologically degraded by microorganisms that exist naturally in the soil - farmers can simply plow the ecovio mulch films back into the ground along with the plant debris.
