BASF brings joy to children in villages around China

Shanghai, China – June 11, 2019 – BASF today kicked off its annual social program in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. The program offers hands-on and inspiring chemistry experiments, and donated books and stationery to children living in the local villages. Under the theme of “Grow with BASF”, the program covers six primary schools in five provinces including Fujian, Henan, Heilongjiang, Sichuan and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

“Supporting growers and local communities is part of our mission,” said Jackson Wang, Director, Business Management and Head of Local Business Unit, Greater China, BASF’s Agricultural Solutions division. “Through interesting experiments, we hope to cultivate students’ interests in science and let them learn how modern farming works nowadays. We want our next generation to be optimistic about their future and invite them to be part of future agriculture with us.”

The program, previously known as the Merivon® charity program in 2018, was named after BASF’s renowned fungicide that helps growers control crop diseases and increase yields. BASF also runs other social initiatives in China’s rural areas, including providing 300 free training sessions on pesticide and distributing 10,000 BASF’s farmer safety kits to farmers annually. Since 2005, over 150,000 farmers have participated in the training programs.

As one of the major foreign investors in China’s chemical industry, BASF is committed to supporting local communities. In 2018, BASF invested a total of €38.4 million (approximately CNY 309 million) supporting social engagement projects worldwide, including not-for-profit activities and business-oriented projects.
