Supporting customer growth across multiple industries

MDI is a key raw material used in the production of polyurethanes, a high-performance plastic contributing to energy efficiency, durability and performance in a wide range of applications. The additional production capacity in Geismar will support the long-term growth of BASF’s customers in key markets including construction, appliances, transportation, automotive, footwear, furniture and other polyurethane-based industries.
A variety of consumer and industrial products are made using MDI.
This significant investment reflects our confidence in the continued growth of the polyurethane market and ensures that our customers benefit from a highly reliable, competitive and locally integrated supply source for years to come. With this expansion BASF is taking the lead in MDI production in North America.

Built for flexibility and reliability

The brand-new MDI plant in Geismar leverages state-of-the-art technology, advanced digitalization and the highest safety standards to increase production flexibility and enable BASF to adapt to dynamic market conditions and customer needs while reinforcing a reliable and competitive supply of MDI in North America.
The new MDI plant is complemented by significant technology investments in predictive maintenance and logistics infrastructure to improve supply assurance and customer experience across North America.
This new MDI plant is a strong sign of BASF’s commitment to manufacturing in the United States, where we have had a presence for more than 150 years. It took an incredible team to bring this plant to life, and to build it safely. We thank our BASF employees in Geismar and globally, and our partners and community leaders across Louisiana and the U.S. This achievement reflects what we can build together.

Strengthening the value chain

BASF's history has been built on manufacturing close to our customers - our local-for-local strategy. As part of the expansion, BASF also increased its aniline production capacity in Geismar, strengthening the site’s integrated value chain and creating additional availability to serve North American customers in the rubber, agricultural chemicals and dyes and pigments industries.
Expanded production capabilities now enable direct aniline sales from our Geismar, Louisiana site.
