BASF receives recognition for environmental stewardship in Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, TN, April 30, 2013 -- BASF has been recognized for its efforts to reduce greenhouse gases, increase energy efficiency and educate employees by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Named the Green Power Switch Workplace Champion of the Year, BASF was honored during the annual Tennessee Electric Cooperative, Association’s Marketing Conference in Gatlinburg, Tenn., on Tuesday, April 23.

In 2012, BASF developed a program that encourages employees to find improvements for issues relating to energy, safety and quality. More than 20,000 suggestions, many of which involved energy reduction, were implemented by BASF in Chattanooga. The company was nominated earlier this year by EPB Electric Power(EPB) for its pledge to outstanding leadership in sustainability through employee engagement.

“BASF has long had a commitment to environmental responsibility,” said Robert Gagliano, Site Director, BASF Chattanooga. “With our daily activity improvement program and other initiatives like the purchase of renewable power through TVA’s Green Power Switch and Renewable Energy Credits, we are able to serve as an example and make a lasting impact in the Tennessee Valley for future generations.”

The BASF Site at Polymer Drive will begin using 100 percent green power sourcing for its electric demand in May. The plant uses eco-efficiency analysis, a process that assesses the costs and environmental impact of products or processes over the complete life cycle to reduce, or even avoid, greenhouse gas emissions.

During the past decade, BASF has globally reduced greenhouse gas emissions per metric ton of sales product by 32 percent, increased energy efficiency by 19 percent and decreased work-related incidents by 50 percent.
