BASF awards scholarships to Anthony Wayne High School student and teachers
Two grants were also presented to teachers in the school district, which would allow them to attend the 21st annual Teachers, Industry, and Environment Conference. The conference encourages teachers from across the State of Ohio to participate in a wealth of science experiments and experience classroom tools that help make science interesting and entertaining for students.
“Over the last 20 years, BASF has donated approximately $50,000 to help support college tuition for Anthony Wayne High School students. The first Whitehouse scholarship winner Daniel Hannewald is now an employee at the BASF site in Wyandotte, Michigan,” highlighted Paul Marshall Technical Director for Automotive Coatings in North America Whitehouse and Site Head. “We want to inspire students and keep them interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) activities and we’re pleased to be able to support outstanding students such Emma Vaughan.” Scholarship applicants were required to submit a 500-word essay about hypothetical discoveries and patents, which were then judged by BASF employees. Emma’s essay was about her hypothetical discovery of “Aseque - a Breakthrough Discovery that breaks through Arterial Plaque”. Later this year, she will attend Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
The awards were presented on May 7 at the annual Community Affairs Program hosted by BASF at the Whitehouse, Ohio facility. Members of the community, including the Mayor of the Village of Whitehouse and the Assistant School Superintendent, were in attendance.
BASF’s Whitehouse facility includes the company’s North American Customer Service Center, Coatings Laboratories and Application and Training Center. With approximately 100 employees, the site provides a wide range of research and development, technical and customer support services for BASF.
