BASF recognizes Anthony Wayne High School student and teachers for excellence in science education
In addition, two grants were presented to the school district. These grants will allow selected teachers to attend the 22nd annual Teachers, Industry and Environmental Conference in Columbus, Ohio. This conference encourages teachers from across the state of Ohio to participate in a variety of science experiments and experience classroom tools that help make science engaging for students.
“Science Education is an important focus for BASF. Locally, we have donated more than $50,000 over the last 20 years to support college tuition for Anthony Wayne High School students,” said Paul Marshall, Technical Director for Automotive Refinish in North America.
Scholarship applicants were asked to submit a 500-word essay about a hypothetical science innovation of their own creation that would be tested in outer space. Matthew’s essay was about developing a new, synthetic anabolic steroid to prevent muscle loss and deterioration. He hypothesized that faster data collection would occur because the muscles that fight gravity and maintain posture are nearly unused in space and muscle atrophy would happen at a much faster rate. Later this year, Matthew will attend Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
The awards were presented on May 6 at the annual Community Affairs Program hosted by BASF at the Whitehouse, Ohio facility. Members of the community, including leaders from the Village of Whitehouse and the school district superintendent, were in attendance.
BASF’s Whitehouse facility is home to approximately 100 employees and the site provides a wide range of research and development, technical and customer support services for BASF’s Automotive Refinish business in North America.
