BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals plant tour a career eye-opener for local students

PORT ARTHUR, TX, August 07, 2014 -- Even if you're a freshman in high school, it's not too early to start preparing for your career. That's the message BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals LLC helped reinforce when students and teachers from Memorial 9th Grade Academy recently toured the facility in Port Arthur, TX. The company opened its doors to students enrolled in the school's Industrial Arts Summer Program.

"It’s important to introduce students of all ages to our facility and to the variety of career opportunities available in our industry," said Greg Masica, Vice President and Site Manager of BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals LLC. "We place a great deal of emphasis on recruiting a talented, skilled workforce from our communities. We can make that happen by partnering with schools to link education to jobs."

In addition to familiarizing students with area employers, the Industrial Arts Summer Program stresses the importance of math and science courses and how they relate to jobs in various industries. Students toured the BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals control room and machine shop, where they were able to interact with employees and ask questions.

"Before the tour, I didn't realize there were so many different jobs at BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals," said Kenneth Daigre, teacher for the Industrial Arts Summer Program. "The tour was an eye-opening experience because it showed students how the choices they're making today can help prepare them for a number of industrial careers."
