11 students across the Southeast excel at BASF summer internship program

Employees connecting classroom learning with on-the-job skills

MCINTOSH, AL, August 2, 2016 – Eleven college students from universities across the Southeast region recently completed summer internships at BASF’s site in McIntosh. Student interns worked with employee mentors to receive firsthand experiences that challenged them to contribute to the site’s productivity and performance.

“To meet our growing workforce needs, BASF continues to expand its annual summer internship program,” says Jason Slinkard, Site Director of the BASF site in McIntosh. “It’s important for us to partner with these colleges and universities to create a diverse pipeline of talent.”

The student interns performed a variety of hands-on tasks focusing on equipment reliability, shipping and receiving goods, checking samples in the labs, and working with operators in production units.

Hunter Jones’ favorite assignment was researching ways to increase and improve production. Jones, who is majoring in mechanical engineering, will be a sophomore at the University of Kentucky this fall. “The chance to work for an organization like BASF has proven to be more influential than I’d ever hoped,” he said. “I will return to school with broader teambuilding skills and a stronger ability to understand and apply the content of my classes.”

For Thomas Taylor, the internship gave a clearer understanding of a career in logistics, which will help when he graduates next year as a supply chain management major at Auburn University. “I enjoy the assignments where I’m challenged to improve existing processes and the positive impact those decisions have on customers,” he said.

The two were joined by Xavier Barnes, Faulkner State Community College; Mary Chesebro, Auburn University; Sharla Rainwaters, University of South Alabama; Jaylon Busby, Zane Warr, Brandon Threadgill, Jacob Holston, Dedrick Franks and Zane Montgomery, Alabama Southern Community College.
