BASF recognized with environmental stewardship award

MCINTOSH, AL, October 14, 2020 – The BASF facility in McIntosh, Alabama received a 2020 Environmental Stewardship Award from Partners for Environmental Progress (PEP) for the site’s pollinator garden. By installing a pollinator garden and outdoor classroom, local students can explore chemistry through safe and engaging experiments, coupled with interactive demonstrations. To date, more than 300 students have visited the garden and outdoor classroom at the McIntosh facility.

The pollinator garden stems from the biodiversity research initiative that BASF launched called Living Acres. While populations of the monarch butterflies have plummeted by approximately 90 percent and continue to decline, this initiative is pushing forward to provide information to farmers about planting milkweed in non-crop areas in an economical and practical manner with the goal of increasing the monarch population.

“We are honored to receive a PEP Environmental Stewardship Award,” said Bob Mulholland, interim Site Director for BASF’s McIntosh facility. “Helping to ensure a healthy monarch butterfly population is part of BASF’s commitment to sustainability and being responsible environmental stewards.”

PEP presented the award to BASF during its virtual annual meeting on September 24. PEP is a coalition of business and education leaders who share the vision of applying science-based environmental best practices to business and community issues. Founded in 2000, the organization promotes business growth while preserving and enhancing the environmental and quality of life along the Gulf Coast.
