Who we are

1994 / Sustainability

BASF has been committed to the model of sustainability since 1994. For BASF, this means to combine economic success with social responsibility and environmental protection. Sustainability drives BASF’s growth and becomes part of its mission statement in 2011: We create chemistry for a sustainable future.

In order to quantify the three dimensions of sustainability – environment, society and economy – BASF develops analysis methods. The first of them is Eco-Efficiency Analyses in 1996, followed by SEEbalance (Socio-Eco-Efficiency-Balance). The criteria for BASF’s eco-efficiency analysis are costs and environmental impact factors such as energy and raw material consumption and emissions. SEEBALANCE broadens the process to include the assessment of societal impacts of products and processes.
