BASF BATTERY MATERIALS AND RECYCLING SCHWARZHEIDE GMBH
is an important part of the European value chain for electromobility and plays a key role in establishing a circular economy for electric car batteries in Europe.
In 2023, the first fully automated large-scale production plant for cathode materials in Germany and Europe was commissioned at the site, which is specially tailored to the needs of cell and car manufacturers. The carbon footprint of BASF's innovative cathode materials benefits significantly from BASF's efficient production technologies, which include minimised energy consumption and a high proportion of renewable energy. In addition, BASF operates a commercial plant for black mass production from spent batteries, which contains important metals such as lithium and nickel. The recovery of these metals is crucial for the reliable supply of raw materials in Europe. At the same time, battery recycling contributes to the sustainability of electric vehicles, as recycled metals have a significantly lower CO2 footprint.
