Ludwigshafen site is the cradle of the Verbund idea. With an area of approximately ten square kilometers the Ludwigshafen site is the world’s largest integrated chemical complex. Production facilities, energy flows and logistics are intelligently networked to utilize resources most efficiently, to create economies of scope and to leverage competitive advantages together.
The Verbund system enables us to create efficient value chains, ranging from basic chemicals to high value-added solutions. Our chemical production network closes material and energy cycles. By-products of one process can be repurposed as the starting materials for another. In collaboration with our site partners, we achieve significant savings in raw materials and energy, minimize emissions, cut logistics costs and exploit synergies in developing and applying new technologies or using digital solutions.

Logistics Verbund
… connects production facilities through a network of pipelines, providing fast, safe, and eco-friendly transportation routes for raw materials and energy sources. Costs, effort and risk associated with transportation, handling and storage are reduced, allowing intermediate product warehouses to be reduced or eliminated completely.
Production Verbund
… ensures competitive supply of key products to all product segments with value chains rooted in the Verbund. Two steamcrackers are among the largest of BASF’s production facilities in Ludwigshafen and form the heart of the production Verbund.
Energy Verbund
Process waste heat is recovered by heat integration between different process units, thus reducing the total primary energy requirement. In this way, our site's primary energy consumption is cut by half, CO2-emissions are avoided, as well as cost efficiency and ecological benefits realized.
