Safety through service provider selection and monitoring

Our collaboration with external logistics suppliers is centered on safety.
To assess the performance of our carriers, we use both our own methods and internationally recognized analysis instruments, such as the Safety & Quality Assessment System for Sustainability (SQAS). If our standards are not met, we address these issues in quality and safety briefings with the logistic companies and implement necessary improvement measures immediately.

Marine and barge transportation

For marine and barge transportation, independent specialists assess ship condition, equipment and operation. As a member of the CDI (Chemical Distribution Institute), BASF evaluates these safety reports and, on this basis, decides which tankers to use for transporting BASF products.

Safety through design, training and monitoring

We have a network of specialists ensuring that Transportation Safety tasks are performed compliant to both external and internal requirements.
Our specialists, the Transportation and Distribution Safety Advisors (TDSAs) assist operating units in designing operative tasks to comply with these regulations. They also ensure that all employees involved in transportation safety tasks receive adequate training. We use a variety of means, including e-learning modules, and make use of both internal and external training resources.
We continually assess and evaluate our performance on Transportation Safety using a globally coordinated procedure. Transport safety is a part of Responsible Care® audits, and our specialists also perform internal assessments (TDS Reviews) according to a global process.

Safety through risk assessment

We regularly evaluate the risks associated with transporting chemical materials with high hazard potential using our global requirements. This evaluation is based on the guideline of the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC).
