Who we are

Welcome to BASF in Michigan

BASF’s manufacturing presence in Michigan includes operations in Livonia and Wyandotte.

For more than 150 years, BASF has been part of Michigan’s story, longer than the local automakers, the Mackinac Bridge, and even the Detroit Tigers. Our roots date back to 1869 as the Michigan Alkali Company, and in 1969, BASF acquired the Wyandotte site, marking its first major U.S. acquisition.

Today, BASF operates in Livonia and Wyandotte, employing more than 1,200 people and investing approximately $175 million annually through payroll, purchases, taxes, and charitable contributions.

Our Michigan sites produce materials that improve everyday life, such as thermoplastic polyurethane foams that go into running shoes and jounce bumpers made from our Cellasto® foam that soften pothole impacts. In fact, nine out of ten carmakers rely on BASF Cellasto® Spring aids.

As the world’s leading chemical company, we combine science and innovation with social responsibility and environmental protection to create solutions for a sustainable future.
