Corporate Volunteering
Social commitment is an important cornerstone of social cohesion. BASF is determined to contribute to this area and is therefore offering various regional volunteering options for its employees.
Since 2016 the global social engagement strategy is defining the general principles of social engagement at all BASF locations worldwide. The common aim is to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

School renovation in Brazil:
In São Paulo, Brazil, one of BASF’s most important local customers, Cyrela, initiated a campaign to renovate schools in the region. 22 BASF employees volunteered to paint the walls of the classrooms that were desperately in need of fresh paint.

Together with 278 employees from other companies, BASF employees turned a school, which required renovations, into a beautiful teaching space in which 1,100 students can once again go about learning.
Water Education Project in India:
In 2011, the charitable organization TERI (The Energy and Resource Institute), with support from the BASF Stiftung, established water laboratories in seven schools in the Indian city of Mangalore. Since then, BASF employees have routinely visited school classes and use the laboratories to show the children how they can save water, test the water quality and which options are available for water treatment. In 2017, 14 volunteers from BASF visited the schools each month and taught almost 5,000 students facts about water.
Land conservancy in New Jersey:
In New Jersey, USA, 15 employees at BASF have joined an initiative of the Land Conservancy of New Jersey to weed, dig up the ground and distribute wood chips for improving the quality of the soil on a part of a nearly 209-acres public community garden.
Connecting disabled children with nature in Korea:
On a small farm, disabled children sow and harvest their own vegetables - together with BASF employees. The children are delighted by these activities and establish further social ties with BASF employees, following the Connected to Care project.
Learning resources in a remote area:
Together with BASF employees and the Doctor's Wives Association of Thailand charity organization, residents living within a mountainous region in northern Thailand have built a library with the aim of making reading and writing materials accessible to everyone.

Healthy food for the poorest inhabitants of Peru:
A large proportion of habitants in a remote mountainous region of the Andes suffer from malnutrition. In order to provide them with a sufficient and balanced diet, BASF employees have constructed greenhouses in collaboration with the charity “Por eso!”. The local residents can use the greenhouses to cultivate vegetables.

Connected to Care – The global program for employee involvement
The huge success of the “Connected to Care” competition, which generated more than 500 projects – 150 of which have now been implemented – has encouraged us to continue “Connected to Care” as a program for employee involvement. Since 2016, “Connected to Care” activities are taking place all around the world, strengthening team spirit amongst BASF employees, developing their social and technical skills and actively shaping their social environment. To this purpose, every BASF site is developing individual formats to support and appreciate its employees' social commitment. All these activities reflect the core principles of Connected to Care: strengthening team mentality, cooperation with a non-profit organization, impact orientation and evaluation of activities. The annual highlight is the “Connected to Care Weeks”, which are used to report on employees' commitment on a global scale.
Connected to Care is an important component of our global strategy on social commitment. The program also promotes employee development and contributes to fulfilling our employer's promise.
