Acute Medical Care
BASF site clinics
At the Ludwigshafen site, the site clinic staff and a company doctor are on duty around the clock – and can respond to acute medical inquiries of BASF employees worldwide by a hotline. There is also the option of telemedicine consultation.
BASF's site clinics are also the first point of contact for all BASF employees, contracted employees and guests at the Ludwigshafen site if they need medical attention.
The medical services range from the treatment of simple ailments such as the common cold to stabilizing acute, life-threatening conditions and the initial and follow-up treatment of occupational or private injuries.
- Workplace and commuting accidents
- Acute illnesses
- Sensory disorders
- Follow-up treatment after accidents (e.g. bandage change)
- Follow-up treatment (e.g. in the case of infections)
- Vaccinations (e.g. travel medicine)
We work closely with general practitioners and specialists in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region and the surrounding hospitals. If serious illnesses are diagnosed, further treatment by a specialist in private practice or transfer to a hospital is initiated.
In the case of accidents at work or on the way to work with serious injuries, the outpatient clinic staff will arrange for the patient to be seen by a doctor in private practice who is licensed by the employers' liability insurance association (a so-called "transit doctor") or in a suitable hospital.
Medical care at the Ludwigshafen site
Our emergency rescue services are on standby 24/7, ready for acute emergencies and to deliver ambulance transport. In addition, BASF employees and contractors at the Ludwigshafen site can seek medical attention at the site clinic anytime.
BASF rescue services and site clinics demonstrate a high level of chemical-specific expertise and many years of clinical experience in the initial and follow-up treatment of chemical-related occupational accidents.
Information on effective treatment after product contact and in cases of intoxication is provided by the Human Toxicology department of Corporate Health Management.
An in-house laboratory for human biomonitoring enables us to determine the concentrations of hazardous substances and their metabolites in the human body using high-performance analytical methods. The results are analyzed using expert knowledge in occupational medicine and toxicology.
In addition to the usual equipment (EN, European standard), the BASF rescue service has extensive medical and safety equipment (e.g. antidotes, decontamination material, special protective clothing, breathing apparatus).
Special situations and neighborhood assistance
In the event of special operating conditions (e.g. difficult accessibility of the emergency site in a container or at great heights, there is close cooperation with the plant fire department). The rescue service is also dispatched to every major firefighting operation as a preventive measure. Its crew initiates the treatment of injured persons and provides medical care for the firefighters.
As part of its neighborly assistance, the BASF rescue service is also deployed outside the site at the request of the Ludwigshafen rescue control center.
At the emergency scene, the patient is first treated by a first aider. After an average of 4 minutes, the emergency service arrive and take over further care. If necessary, an emergency physician is called in. Once the patient is fit for transport, he or she is taken to the BASF outpatient clinic for further examination and treatment.
If special diagnostic or therapeutic measures are required due to the nature or severity of the injury or illness, the patient is transferred to one of the surrounding medical centers.
If the situation is life-threatening, the patient is taken directly to a hospital.
One of the decisive factors for a positive outcome of serious injuries or illnesses is receiving emergency treatment as early as possible. For this reason, BASF attaches great importance to the qualified and chemical-specific training of first aiders.
The Corporate Health Management department is recognized by the employers' liability insurance associations as a company training center.
