Sustainability in Procurement

For us sustainable development means that we strengthen our suppliers’ awareness of our standards and expectations, and shape their contribution to sustainable development in a transparent manner.

Product Carbon Footprint of Raw Materials

Greenhouse gas emissions associated with raw materials are an important part of our overall carbon footprint.

The towers of the aromatics plant on Friesenheim Island, a part of BASF’s Ludwigshafen Verbund site, are visible in the background. This facility can supply the Verbund with up to 300,000 metric tons of benzene per year. It is one of the central Verbund plants that are directly linked to both steam crackers. The steam crackers produce a number of important basic chemical products, including in particular ethylene and propylene.

Renewable Raw Materials

A bio-based feedstock may feature unique properties and functionalities that are either impossible or very difficult to create using fossil resources. Furthermore, it can contribute to saving fossil resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Cobalt initiative

BASF SE and partners have launched "Cobalt for Development", a joint pilot project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It seeks to identify workable solutions that lead to better working conditions at the mine site.

Responsible sourcing of mineral raw materials

We procure a number of mineral raw materials, which we use to produce mobile and process emissions catalysts or battery materials, among other products.
Our aim is to source mineral resources responsibly so that the financing of violence and human rights abuses are prevented.

Our general approach towards all our suppliers is that we act responsibly and rely on our partners to act responsibly, too. Learn more about BASF's engagement and measurements concerning responsible platinum sourcing in Marikana, South Africa.
